The Rookie renewed for season 9; EP on long-term future

As you get prepared to see The Rookie tonight on ABC, we still have more good news to share regarding the future! Not only is there a season 9 officially coming, but there could still be more after the fact.
What has the series managed to pull off at this point that is so notable? Well, there are a handful of things. According to a report from Deadline, the series remains incredibly popular on streaming, and has also achieved a super-rare feat of filming in Los Angeles, having a large cast, and not having to make a lot of substantial budget cuts along the way. Many other shows, including some on the same network, are not in that same boat.

Speaking to the aforementioned publication, showrunner Alexi Hawley had the following to say regarding how long the series could last:
“So far, the mindset across the board is, as Melissa O’Neil said, ‘Let’s Grey’s Anatomy this thing’ … I think everybody is having a good time, it’s a cast that truly loves each other and enjoys coming to work, they get to do fun stuff every day. And at this point, heading into Season 9, I don’t feel like we’re anywhere near out of ideas. Part of that is we’re not a procedural where I have to come up with a body drop every week. We really can reinvent ourselves a lot, and that helps with not feeling like you’re running out of story. Every time you bring in a new rookie or a new character, that also changes things. So, yeah, I would do this until they turn the lights out.”
The bigger challenge for the franchise overall next season may just be incorporating a new spin-off with The Rookie: North currently in the works. However, if that show gets picked up, we tend to think there will be fewer spin-offs between it and Feds, which lasted for just one season.
