Why did Rocky Carroll leave NCIS, role of Leon Vance?

Why did Rocky Carroll leave NCIS following the events of last week’s episode? We certainly understand if anyone misses the character already. How can you not? He was such an incredibly important person in the world and losing him in such a milestone episode like the 500th was devastating.
So why did it happen? Was there another path forward for the show? That is at least something to break down a little bit further.

If you saw some of the interviews following the 500th episode last week, then you will be aware already that it was not Carroll’s decision to leave the long-running crime drama. Instead, it was something that was decided on by the producers and/or the studio. Given that this was a game-changing episode they wanted to deliver on an enormous twist to shake up the show; getting rid of Vance is not something that was done lightly, but he went out a hero as he worked to ensure that the agency was able to exist moving forward.
Now if there is one major question we are left to wonder in the aftermath, it is this: Who is going to be the new Director? We recognize that McGee makes a great deal of sense but at the same exact time, doing this would take him more aware from some of the other characters.
Will the actor ever come back?
This is a world where flashbacks and dream sequences happen, so it is possible! We do at least know that Carroll is going to be back behind the scenes as a director for specific episodes, and that could be a job for him however long he wants it.
