As it may be clear to a lot of people out there already, Tuesday’s new NCIS season 23 episode is going to be pivotal for many reasons. This is, after all, the 500th installment of the show! It is one that could celebrate the series and its legacy, but there are still a number of major obstacles still to come.

What is the first one? Well, let’s just say that it is tied to what’s going to happen to the agency itself. After all, it appears as though the Department of Defense could be shutting it down and it will be up to Vance and the team to try and thwart it. From there, you also do have the question of what is ahead for Timothy McGee, who just learned he has a son in Matteo that he previously never knew existed. Matteo is 18, so in that way he is already an adult; yet, is Sean Murray’s character still going to do what he can to help? This should be an interesting dynamic to explore through most of the season ahead.

Speaking to Parade, showrunner Steven D. Binder noted that there are still some pretty major challenges coming up for the McGee character as we move forward:

“McGee wants to show up and be a father, but he may be walking into a situation that’s bigger than he realizes … Or to put another way, it just might be possible that Matteo’s reaction [to him being around] could be tied to something deeper that McGee doesn’t see yet. And that’s going to create a lot of emotional pressure on McGee.”

Given that this show is a procedural, it is probably a mistake to go into the next episode assuming that we’ll have big updates on McGee every week. However, we are sure that more light will be shed on all of this before the end of the season.
