We know that there are a lot of different traditions ahead of every Super Bowl, and a performance of “America the Beautiful” is among them.

For this year in particular, we had a chance to see someone all the more iconic in Brandi Carlile take to the stage. We know her as a gifted singer-songwriter but at the same time, she has an incredible voice that echoes loudly. We absolutely expected this to be something special.

From the moment that Carlile started the rendition, we knew that it was going to be great. The instrumentation was simple: You had her with the guitar, plus also a cello and violin for accompaniment. She stuck largely to the melody, while at the same time managed to add a few inflections here and there. Also, she did not linger too much on any singular note.

Was this the most memorable performance of Carlile that we’ve had a chance to see on live TV? Let’s just say that her take on “The Story” from Saturday Night Live may still be the top of the list. Still, we do think she did a great job here representing both herself and her craft — we recognize that it can be really tough to garner a lot of praise in this current era, mostly because it is always so much easier to criticize online. However, at the same time there was so much to like about this, and we hope that there are at least some people out there who end up discovering her music as a result.
