‘Dexter’ season 8 premiere spoilers: Michael C. Hall on why Evelyn Vogel matters
The more we hear about Dr. Evelyn Vogel on “Dexter” season 8, the more we realize just how valuable this character could end up being to the entire origin story for who our antihero really is. Do we want to root for Dexter Morgan? Definitely, and the vast majority of the time, we do. However, we often run into not-so-subtle reminders that this is not a character that we are really meant to admire given that he kills people.
The importance of Evelyn is that she brings us back to a simpler time, back before we even had Harry’s Code as some sort of guideline as to how our slayer was supposed to live out his life. For more on this, check out what Michael C. Hall has to say (per TVLine) about how her arrival now is going to shake Dexter as a character, and also redefine to an extent what he knows to be fact:
“The revelations of Dr. Vogel’s presence in Dexter’s story reframes his whole origin story and takes us back to what we discovered him to be at the beginning … Because of that, it’s satisfying and creates a sense of connective tissue to who we knew Dexter to be and how he’s evolved.”
By the end of the first episode, Evelyn’s purpose may start to become clear, but it will not serve to answer what is the primary question surrounding her: Is she meant to be a spirit acting out of good, or destined to strike down and ruin Dexter forever? Thanks to the show getting bumped up three months from its previous premiere date, we are getting a chance to find out very soon.
What do you think about Hall’s comments, and do you think that Dr. Vogel’s arrival will force something new out of the character? For more on this premiere episode from the side of Jennifer Carpenter, we recommend you check out the story over at the link here.
