NBC’s ‘Community’ season 5: Showrunners out, regardless of if Dan Harmon returns

The breaking news from the world of “Community” continues yet again today, and we do now have some more news about the current state of flux at the show, and why it now more than ever needs Dan Harmon to come back.

According to Deadline, David Guarascio and Moses Port, who each served as co-showrunners this past year, were invited back to return for the fifth season following the recent renewal. However, they made the decision to move on to something new. From a personal standpoint, we understand this: They did occasionally do some fine work, but they were panned early on, and the two had a pretty impossible job of working within someone else’s genius rather than having an opportunity to really shine on their own.

With this in mind, the show is definitely in need of new blood to help steer the ship. Not only has Harmon been approached about coming back, but so has former writer-producer Chris McKenna. He was also a part of the show’s success during the first three seasons, and has since signed a deal with Universal Television.

There is no word at the moment as to whether or not either party is going to come back, but there is obviously some interest there, given that Harmon probably would not have ever talked about it in the first place. We’ll keep a close watch on this one, but we better hope that the studio, Harmon, and McKenna come to some sort of resolution soon. Otherwise, we better be prepared to wait a while before we know who exactly is going to be the brains behind “Community” moving forward.
