2013 Teen Choice Awards analysis: Josh Bowman, Nick Wichsler battle Ian Harding
Yesterday, we kicked off our category-by-category take on the 2013 Teen Choice Awards with a look at some of the series nominated in the Drama category. There are some fun choices in here, but we have to be honest and say that “Pretty Little Liars” probably has this competition locked up.
It’s possible that our next category, Choice TV Actor: Drama, is a little bit of a closer race. There is some competition from the same show, a guy who was actually Gossip Girl through almost the entirety of the CW series’ run, and another guy that is probably the favorite despite not really being a lead so much as a supporting actor. What is perhaps most surprising to us, and also emblematic of much teen-oriented TV right now, is that none of these nominees are really the “star” of their respective show.
The nominees – Penn Badgley, “Gossip Girl” (The CW), Josh Bowman, “Revenge” (ABC), Lucas Grabeel, “Switched at Birth,” (ABC Family), Ian Harding, “Pretty Little Liars” (ABC Family), Nick Wechsler, “Revenge”
The favorite – We don’t think it is necessarily a lock given that there are some other actors here have some fairly strong fan followings (which is really the calling card of the TCAs), but Harding still has a comfortable lead. “Pretty Little Liars” has an enormous Twitter presence, and we’re not quite sure as to what, if anything, could slow that momentum down other than a massive campaign of the other followings all coming together.
Who should win – Wechsler. While Grabeel is also an intriguing possibility, the “Revenge” star had a pretty rough season. Not only did he marry a woman who was not Amanda Clarke, but thought that she was, but he also found out that the real Amanda is still alive … and going by the name of Emily Thorne. Shocker? Definitely, and he played it very well.
