‘Dexter’ season 8: Does [spoiler] booking new pilot set ending in stone?

DexterIf you remember back to a few days ago, then the words of CBS executive Les Moonves are probably ringing in your head that “Dexter” season 8 will probably be the Showtime series’ last bow. There was talk for some time about there being another year in order for the show to capitalize on a recent ratings bump, but there was never really much traction for that other than the show’s executives saying that a potential ninth-season order was up to the network. (Warning: possible spoilers ahead!)

So what’s the latest bit of evidence that “Dexter” is at an end? According to a new report from Deadline, James Remar (who you probably better know as Harry Morgan) has been cast in the upcoming NBC adaptation of “Hatfields & McCoys.” Specifically, he will be playing the role of the wealthy Joe Hatfield, which will seemingly make him a regular of the show picks up.

So what does this mean? Considering that Remar’s deal on “Dexter” is up after this season, there is not likely to be any positioning here that keeps him from being on “Hatfields & McCoys” if the Showtime series is picked up, and we like to think that the network would have given the actor some sort of green light to pursue other opportunities after eight years on the job. Remar may be looking forward to the opportunity to play someone that more than just Michael C. Hall can see, but it is hard to really see his flagship show continuing without him standing by as the manifestation of Dexter’s inner conscience.
