‘The Walking Dead’ season 3 spoilers: Would Rick be dead if Daryl hadn’t come back?

Norman ReedusFans were fairly worried that when Daryl decided to leave Rick’s group and go traipsing around the forest with his jerk of a brother Merle that this was going to be the last we saw of him, but last Sunday’s episode of “The Walking Dead” season 3 surprised and delighted everyone.

While out on the road with Merle, Daryl found life was a lot more complicated – not only does he still not get a long with Merle, but resources are a lot harder to come by, not to mention having no where to sleep that’s safe.  When the Dixon brothers came upon a family being attacked by walkers on a bridge, Daryl was quick to jump in and help, while Merle didn’t see the point if there was nothing in it for him.  Once the family was safe, Merle decided to try and rob the family, because he felt that he was owed for his help with the walkers.  Daryl forced him to leave the family alone with the help of his crossbow and the fight that ensued afterwards made Daryl realize that leaving Rick’s group was the biggest mistake of his life.

Daryl and Merle made it back to the prison just in time to help save Rick and the group from the Governor’s attack, but it wasn’t without it’s casualties.  Axel, who was beginning to become a fan favorite, didn’t make it out of the attack alive and Daryl, Merle, Rick and Michonne found themselves on the wrong side of the prison walls after all was said and done, but at least Rick is still alive and it’s all thanks to Daryl.  In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Glen Mazzara said that the backlash from Twitter about separating Daryl from the group was pretty intense, because viewers thought he was gone from the show for good.  Mazzara said:

“That’s the first time you’ve ever seen Rick since the pilot and said, how is this guy ever going to get out of this? Last week on Twitter a lot of people were saying “Curse you, Glen Mazzara, you’ve written Daryl out of the show! He’s off the show now because he left with Merle.” And I’m just thinking, no, he’s off walking around the woods until he figures out his brother’s a jerk and he comes back at just the perfect heroic moment to save Rick. Because if he didn’t show up, Rick would have been a goner. That arrow comes in and it’s hopefully a Rocky moment where people will cheer.”

A new episode of “The Walking Dead” season 3 airs on Sunday, February 24th at 9 p.m. on AMC, so be sure to tune in and see what Rick’s next move will be now that the security at the prison has been compromised.
