‘Game of Thrones’ season 3 spoilers: New talk on Iceland filming

With the return of “Game of Thrones” season 3 just two short months away, it’s getting closer to the time in which we are really going to see more details about just what happened a few months ago.

In the latest entry in Cat Taylor’s popular Making of Game of Thrones blog, the assistant to showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss explained just how different it was being in Iceland this year, a spot that was a major part of the show last year courtesy of the plot between Jon Snow and Ygritte. Does the shorter time in the country mean that we are not going to see as much of these two? Not necessarily; for now, we’ll just let Taylor’s words speak for themselves:

“This year’s on-location shoot in Iceland is quite different from last year’s. We are shooting a month earlier and for only eight days, whereas we were in Iceland for nearly a month in 2011. The trip, our first to Iceland, spanned three main locations and many hundreds of miles, with stays in Svinafelljokull, Vatnjokull, Vik and many locations surrounding each base.

“For Season 3, we were lucky enough to see another part of Iceland entirely as we are based in the Myvatn Lake region in the North, a few hours from the town of Akureyi.”

Taylor and the entire crew dealt with some rather terrible filming conditions through almost the entirety of production, including some frigid temperatures and blizzards that made it difficult for the team working on the show to do their jobs. However, the work clearly got done, and based on what we know about Jon’s storyline coming up, it is fair to say that fans are going to be in for quite a treat.
