‘Dexter’ season 8 to return this summer, says Showtime boss

For those of you who were wondering why in the world “Dexter” season 8 was already in the casting process, we now have an answer: the show is being fast-tracked in order to debut in the summer.

At Showtime’s official TCA panel on Saturday, network boss David Nevins confirmed the the serial killer drama is going to return three months earlier than usual on Sunday, June 30. Why the short break? It’s pretty simple: with the network launching two new shows this year in “Ray Donovan” and “Masters of Sex,” they want to make sure that both of these series have as many opportunities as possible in order for them to succeed. “Dexter” and “Homeland,” after all, have already proven that they can stand on their own in the ratings based on their dedicated fan followings.

As for some other very interesting news from the TCA event, Nevins also announced that season 8 of the show is not necessarily the end:

“I’m not making any announcements today about when Dexter will end … I will clarify [the end date] before Dexter goes on the air. There’s a clear endgame in place, [but] I can’t talk about it just yet.”

Originally, there were rumors that the final season of the show was going to be for sixteen episodes, but this was later found out to not be the truth. Instead, writer Scott Reynolds confirmed recently that we are once again staring at a 12-episode season, which will be concluded by either a season or series finale. We’re sure that Showtime is looking at their options considering the ratings from last year, but you also don’t want to drag the show on beyond its expiry date.
