NBC’s ‘The Voice’ season 5: ‘American Idol’s’ Jermaine Jones to reportedly audition
Through most of its run on TV so far, “The Voice” has tried a good dealn to distance itself from “American Idol” whether it be by having a very different sort of audition process, coaches that are involved with the contestants, and an overall vibe that really focuses a little bit more on the vocals than on emotional stories designed to get votes.
However, we know through Frenchie Davis already that the show is not occasionally afraid to take contestants from the Fox series who were disqualified from the show due to some problems from their past. So could somehow else potentially join her? If Jermaine Jones has his way, the answer here could easily be yes.
According to a post on his official Twitter account, Jones, who was kicked off of “American Idol” season 11 over not disclosing that there were outstanding warrants out for him over a string of incidents in his past, made it clear that he is currently planning to audition for season 5 of “The Voice” at an open call next month. Considering that he is a New Jersey native, our guess is that he will attend the auditions in New York City on February 16 in hopes of getting a chance to audition for some of the coaches.
So does Jermaine have a major shot here at actually getting on another reality singing competition? At the moment, we are honestly a little bit torn over his prospects. There is no questioning that the guy has a pretty powerful voice, but his deep tone can come across as wobbly. Not only that, but he seemed saddled with just one ballad after another during his time on the show. In addition to all of this, his story is much different than Frenchie’s: it had been years since she was let go from “American Idol” over some X-rated pictures that surfaced online, whereas Jones’ exit is rather recent, and the nature of it was far more criminal. There were also reports coming out at the time that he was not always the easiest guy to work with backstage, and you have to factor in that he made it pretty far in the competition before his exit.
What do you think: should Jermaine really have a second change to give reality TV a shot, and do you think that he would actually get any votes now? If Jermaine Jones or anyone else is presently clean wrt any minor offenses, then let them audition. But only if the show intends to allow them to win. Don’t just use them for ratings on live shows and then ditch them for the wrong reasons. Don’t let them in unless they have an equal opprotunity with the american fans. I say let him sing. The guy’s unique, and can serve as a role model. He seems to be persistent as well, which is a very good sign. He’s gota earn his spot though.
