Al Gore’s Current TV in talks to be acquired by Al Jazeera

Could Al Jazeera soon have itself a much greater presence when it comes to American television? If the new deal being talked about today ends up becoming a reality, the answer here is that we could be seeing much more in the way of different programming soon on a network that we now know as Current TV.

According to a report from the New York Times, the international news outlet based in Qatar, whose English channel is widely praised for being one of the best sources for unfiltered news around the world, is in talks to purchase the left-leaning news network that was co-founded by Al Gore in 2005. Current TV is in a large percentage of households with cable, but it has never really been able to obtain that much of an audience. Its last big attempt at doing so came with the hire of Keith Olbermann back in 2011, but this ended up being a rather spectacular failure as he was handed a pink slip not long after in a dispute over election coverage and issues around the workplace.

Al Jazeera would likely transform Current into a network that covers new programmed mixed with some from their English channel, which is at the moment not carried by many cable news outlets. This move would be a major step in giving viewers another source for news that carries with it a bit of a different perspective, and does not often focus solely on the American angle to every story.
