Discovery cleans house again, cancels Mike Rowe’s ‘Dirty Jobs’

At the moment, the folks over at Discovery are truly taking no prisoners. Only a matter of days after ending one of their most-successful long-running shows in “American Chopper,” the network is once again making another shocking move; though this time around, they are dropping the guillotine on Mike Rowe’s series “Dirty Jobs.”

Rather than waiting for the network to make some sort of official statement on the matter, Rowe, who has been hosting the engaging and often educational show since 2003, took to his personal blog to express some sadness, but at the same time joy over the opportunities he has had to make television that entertained for so long:

“I can’t say that Dirty Jobs never jumped the shark (since I literally leaped over one in season two), but I’m proud to say it’s still the same hatchet … The last episode looked pretty much like the first. We didn’t become something we weren’t. We never shared the sewer with Paris Hilton, and we never invited you to ‘tune in next week for a very special Dirty Jobs.’ We stuck to the mission statement. We stayed small. We worked hard. And we had a hell of a good time. It was, as they say, a very good run.”

Really, the reason behind the end of “Dirty Jobs” is the same sort of one given to the majority of shows that are canceled these days: lower ratings. While the show was once more of a ratings smash, numbers slowly deteriorated on the network as viewers started to check out other options across the TV landscape. Discovery is obviously looking to re-brand themselves when it comes to their programming, and bringing in some new blood is one way to do that.
