Crisis on Infinite Earths boss on big Oliver Queen – Part 1 twist

Crisis On Infinite Earths

Tonight, Crisis on Infinite Earths arrived on The CW and it’s fair to say one thing about the of this: It was crazy. VERY crazy. How else do you describe what happened with Oliver Queen?

Tonight’s Part 1 ended with something that was both shocking and not shocking. After all, it’s been clear for a while that Stephen Amell’s character would be killed off during the crossover … though Felicity got a chance to visit him in the future. That offers us hope that he’s out there alive somewhere, but we don’t know exactly where that is or what that will look like.

For now, all we can do is focus on what’s in front of us: Oliver Queen is dead. That’s not an easy thing for us to look past, and it’s something that is going to haunt a lot of the other characters in the weeks/months to come.

Speaking in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Marc Guggenheim made it clear that there were challenges in trying to find a way to create a big shocker at the center of this story:

“The dilemma that we presented to our own selves was that we spoiled our own story … So if Oliver dying isn’t the surprise, what is the surprise? And the timing of him dying, because I think we kinda figured the audience is expecting that Oliver would die in the climax in the fifth hour. So if we went in the opposite direction and killed him off at the end of Hour, we accomplish two things: Hopefully we do surprise the audience. That’s absolutely the intention. But we also really establish the stakes that going into the next four hours, ‘Wow, if Oliver Queen can die, then no one is safe.’”

Now, is there a way to find him or get him back? We wouldn’t rule anything out, but there are all sorts of other people who are also feeling a sense of tremendous loss. Just think in terms of all of the people on Earth-48 who also found themselves dead at the end of it all.
