Is World on Fire renewed for season 2, canceled at BBC One?
Well, at the moment there’s a little bit of good and bad news mixed in here at the same time. Let’s start, though, with the good — it does appear as though there are creatively some plans to continue the story!
Speaking in a new piece courtesy of the Radio Times, writer Peter Bowker made it clear that you are going to have more opportunities to see this show continue for a little while:
“I know what happens over six series for the main characters … If you pitch a show, people will often ask ‘What happens in series four, episode three? What happens to this character?’ You’ve got to know and not be English about it.”
Of course, herein comes the bad news: It’s all going to be up to the BBC in order to renew the series. Nothing is official as of this writing, but we imagine that there will be some good news sooner rather than later. While we wouldn’t necessarily proclaim World on Fire to be an enormous, jaw-dropping hit, the numbers have at least been solid. We remain at least cautiously optimistic on the prospect of there being a little bit more of World on Fire over time, so let’s just cross our fingers and hope for the best.
In some ways, you could argue that World on Fire will be somewhat limited by the historical period in which it is set. Yet, at the same time it’s really all about what Bowker and the writers choose to do with their material. There’s enough story possibilities here to easily make it to that aforementioned six seasons … it’s going to be mostly all about seeing how big the audience is one season after the next. There is always going to be that underlying fear of viewership fatigue.
