‘Downton Abbey’ season 3 spoilers: Where could O’Brien go from here?

We spend so much time talking about the crew upstairs on “Downton Abbey,” so why not focus a little bit more attention on a character whose storyline has decreased in the past few weeks in O’Brien? The woman is not always the easiest character for some of the servants to get along with, but there have been at least a few times this season when her personal struggle has made her somewhat sympathetic.

So where could this character go from here? While it is hard to necessarily predict in full what writer Julian Fellowes will want to do with these characters,  but Siobhan Finneran told the Radio Times that if she were to have it her way, she would love to see her character get involved in some sort of romantic entanglement:

“O’Brien with a boyfriend would be stupendous! Who would be brave enough to take her on a date? Kevin Doyle, who plays Molesley, and I are always speculating what our characters would be like on a date – it would be hilarious.”

Once you consider that there are only two episodes left for the season, including the Christmas special, and that the show has so many storylines already happening in between Baby Sybil and Thomas kissing Jimmy, there’s probably not time for something like this to happen at the moment. However, you should not be particularly stunned if O’Brien does have something more to do in the fourth season, which should start airing in the spring of next year in order for it to be completely ready for a fall 2013 launch.
