The Voice season 17 introduces new steal during Battle Rounds
At the end of tonight’s new episode of The Voice season 17, we had a chance to see something very much exciting — another twist in the competition! For the first time, coaches in the battle rounds had a chance to save someone on their own team, as opposed to having them end up somewhere else.
So is this a step forward for the competition, or some sort of a step back? We could understand a case for both things being true here, but for the time being, we’d lean more towards the latter. A part of what makes The Voice is seeing another coach pick up another person’s top talent, therefore creating a little bit of chaos and unpredictability. It’s also funny when that person who was stolen ends up going so much further in the competition than someone who was kept.
With this twist (which has already been used), we did see coaches go ahead and use this — and of course, it makes sense for a given artist to stick with who they know as opposed to someone different. They’d have to start over there with a new team that they aren’t anywhere near as familiar with.
In the end, though, we do at least appreciate The Voice trying to do something in order to ensure that they can mix things up a little bit. Nobody wants to ensure that the competition is stagnant and ultimately the same thing year after year. There’s no excitement or drama in that. Instead, things become a little bit more interesting when they find a way to alter the formula … and it’s pretty clear, at least to us, that the middle rounds of the show are the ones that need the biggest shakeup overall. There are a lot of little issues here that need some fine-tuning and we forget about way too many of the singers too fast.
We’ll still see where this twist goes leading into the end of the season. It’s a little early to make a gross evaluation on something one way or the other.
