Evil, Perfect Harmony, & Sunnyside ratings fall; Legacies returns so-so

The fall 2019 season continues to be a rough one for broadcast networks, and we saw this especially in terms of Thursday night. Think of it — The Big Bang Theory is gone, established shows are sliding, and the networks are having a very hard time managing to get a new hit on the schedule.

For some more evidence of that, just take a look at the numbers for last night!

Perfect Harmony – We really wanted to believe that this Bradley Whitford musical comedy would turn into a big hit — it feels on the surface like the sort of thing viewers would like! Yet, with just a 0.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic, it doesn’t feel like the sort of show that is going to have a long life.

Sunnyside – Meanwhile, the Kal Penn comedy still feels on track to be, unfortunately, the first show canceled this fall. Generating a 0.3 rating in the demo is never the sort of thing that inspires confidence, and while it didn’t fall too much harder versus last week, its numbers are still on the decline.

Evil – Finally, the CBS drama starring Mike Colter and Michael Emerson slipped down to a 0.5 rating last night in its third airing. We knew that this was going to be a high-risk / high-reward series, and we’re getting some more evidence of this now. We’re a little more optimistic still with it than some other shows on the schedule, but it’s got an uphill battle long-term to keep its traction.

The Unicorn – Drawing a 0.7 rating in the demo for CBS may look great compared to everything we’ve just spelled out, but consider this: Both the show before it (in Young Sheldon) and after it (in Mom) are generating better numbers. Viewers are actively tuning it out in between, and that’s never a great sign.

As for some returning shows, last night Supernatural returned with a 0.4 rating. Meanwhile, Legacies came back with a 0.3 rating in the demo, about equal with where it was for its series premiere last year. It didn’t get a streaming bump like All American did earlier this week, but it’s obviously done enough to retain its audience and it can feel very good about that.
