Is Jesse Williams leaving Grey’s Anatomy for Little Fires Everywhere?
Today, that is coming in the form of a new project for the actor in Little Fires Everywhere, the upcoming project coming to Hulu. According to a report from Deadline, Williams is going to recur in the project as Joe Ryan, a “wealthy Wall Streeter who for years has struggled to conceive. Joe and his wife, Madeline, turn to an unlikely source to help start their family.” He is appearing on the show alongside someone else with Shondaland ties in Scandal alum Kerry Washington, who is also executive-producing alongside her big-name co-star in Reese Witherspoon.

As for what this means for Williams’ future as Jackson Avery, it doesn’t cement him as departing the series for good. Williams did sign a contract to return to Grey’s Anatomy before the premiere last week, but it’s possible that it may not require him to be in anywhere near as many episodes as he has been a part of in the past. He’s also got a stage gig coming in the new year, and we know in general he has been looking to diversify his portfolio as of late. He has gotten more into directing, and also recently played an important role in the video game Detroit: Become Human.
So, for now, we wouldn’t consider Little Fires Everywhere to be the reason that Williams leaves Grey’s Anatomy … provided of course he ever does. Because this is a recurring role, it’s not going to have priority over anything that he is doing on the medical drama. Given that the Hulu and stage role will likely dictate some time away from the show, though, we’ll be watching to see if the Jackson character is written out temporarily … and how.
