NCIS: Los Angeles ratings fall; The Rookie starts okay in new timeslot

The first ratings are in for Sunday night’s television lineup, and they are just as complicated as ever. We say this in particular for fans of shows like  God Friended Me and  NCIS: Los Angeles, who tend to find themselves bouncing around like a hot potato between one timeslot and the next thanks to CBS football overruns. What CBS doesn’t quite realize is that viewers are not altogether patient anymore. In a world where they have Netflix, Hulu, and a million other things that they can watch at just about any time, there is no reason for them to have to sit around and wait for a show to start because of a delay. We do think that this impacts ratings.

With all of this spelled out, we can’t be shocked that God Friended Me and NCIS: Los Angeles each fell to a 0.9 and 0.6 rating, respectively, in the 18-49 demographic. The drop for Los Angeles is especially concerning, given that this is a long-running series and that typically carries with it a particular price tag. We don’t want to overreact, but starting off a new season with that number is a tad worrisome.

It may sound a little hypocritical to be concerned about NCIS: LA for its number and be praising The Rookie for its own (0.7), especially given that the numbers are fairly close to each other. Yet, there is a reason to do so here. We didn’t have many expectations for The Rookie entering its second season in a new timeslot, but it ended up actually tying its average rating for season 1 and also improving this timeslot significantly from where it was on ABC this past fall. With NCIS LA, the show is down more than 20% at the moment from its prior-season average. Maybe that will change when it gets to air in less of an NFL-dictated timeslot.

Over on Fox, the premiere of The Simpsons (0.9) led the way, while the premiere of Bless the Harts ended up averaging the same rating as  Bob’s Burgers and  Family Guy, which each brought in a 0.7 rating. All in all, an okay start there … but not spectacular.
