Songland finale: JT Roach’s ‘Somebody to Love’ now a OneRepublic song

Songland

Tonight was the big Songland finale, and because of that, we entered the episode with a slightly different philosophy. How could we not? We had to prepare for this to be the last episode for a while, and it was also important because the musical act at the center of the show.

What we’ve come to know about OneRepublic over the years is that they make great mainstream music — yet, they also find a way to extract meaning into them.

Madi, “Darkest Days” – One of the things that Ryan Tedder loved about this song is how it managed to pair some of its internal darkness with also echoes and moments of hope. It was a cool song, and one that did fit the OneRepublic aesthetic very much. Yet, did it fit it too much? That’s something that we weren’t quite sure of, given that it didn’t end up being chosen.

JT Roach, “Somebody to Love” – This is the song that Tedder and OneRepublic ended up choosing, and we cannot say exactly that we’re all that surprised. From the end of the performance it was clear that there was a lot going on here for the group to like, especially when it comes to doing something that felt different from anything else that we’ve seen the band take on in recent years. There was a longing here, plus a melody that got stuck in Ryan’s head the moment we heard it.

Brigetta, “Be Somebody” – While the melody was there from the get-go, the concern was that the message was a little bit too much of “I want to be famous.” Yet, that was soon flipped into more of “I want to be your somebody” and the song came together in some cool ways. It was a great example of the evolution that comes with Songland and what the show does well, but it didn’t ultimately capture Ryan’s attention enough.
