Last Man Standing season 8: Jay Leno returning for more as Joe

Last Man Standing

You’re going to have to wait for some time (think 2020) in order to see Last Man Standing season 8 come onto Fox, so how about some scoop while you wait?

In a new post on Twitter, star Tim Allen confirms that you’ll see Jay Leno returning as Joe early on in the season — it’s not in the premiere, but seeing him within the first run of episodes is still exciting news. Ever since his debut back in season 5, Leno has been a recurring presence as the character, who (naturally) is skilled in the way of cars much as the former Tonight Show host is in real life.

The idea of Jay Leno returning to the sitcom probably won’t come as an enormous surprise. After all, he was on the series so much in season 7 that he felt like a natural part of the universe. Also, we like to think that he and Tim Allen are cut from similar comedy cloths and have a good relationship outside of their work — both are frequently-touring comedians who have a lot of experience and success under their belts.

What Leno’s return to Last Man Standing likely means at this point is more storylines around Outdoor Man and inter-office conflict. Our hope is that, along the way, we also get a chance to learn a little bit more about Joe outside of some of his hobbies and what is already out there. While we don’t expect Leno to become a series regular anytime soon, there should be time to dive more into this character … provided that the comedian appears in around the same number of episodes that he did back in season 7.

If you did not know as of yet, Last Man Standing will air on Thursday nights starting in early 2020, as it will be replacing Thursday Night Football on the Fox schedule and leading off a full night of comedy. With The Big Bang Theory now off the air, the sitcom has a chance to become one of the most successful series in this genre on all TV.
