American Princess canceled at Lifetime; no season 2 coming
As confirmed in a new post on the show’s official Twitter account, Lifetime is moving away from the Renaissance Faire-set series after just a run of ten episodes. The show’s been over now for a couple of months, and the move means that the network (for now) is completely absent of consistent scripted programming in terms of original properties.
We hoped for a time that American Princess would be able to move over to a streaming platform after we saw something similar go down over with YOU, which ended its run on Lifetime after just one season. Alas, we haven’t heard any news about American Princess making the same kind of move – although a platform like Netflix would really benefit from a show like this after cancelling Santa Clarita Diet. They have space for a smart, adult comedy like this one.
When you look at the ratings alone, it’s clear why Lifetime made the decision that they did here. This was a show averaging lower than a 0.1 rating on average in the live numbers, and that’s not going to be enough for almost any network to want to take another trip back to the Ren Faire. With that being said, it’s not like the network did the show any favors. American Princess was scheduled at 10 pm (which makes sense with the adult content), but at a time where most of its audience had to get up early for work the next day. Then they ended the season by putting up double episodes leaving the second episode ending at midnight!!! It also wasn’t granted that much in the way of a promotional campaign and if you just look at the title of the show alone without knowing what it’s about it’s hard to grab the right audience.
With its quality, clever sense of humor, and great writing, American Princess should have been handed the title of Queen of Summer TV. Unfortunately, we’re now in a situation instead where it is little more than a serf in the eyes of executives – but not for us. We’re going to miss this show, which may have been pound for pound one of the most engaging new series in 2019. We just hope that its untimely end doesn’t lead to fewer chances being taken by network TV shows to embraces concepts that are a little bit outside the established mold. This wasn’t a genre series, it didn’t stem from a franchise, and nor did it lead heavily on a big-name cast. It was truly original, and there was a refreshing feeling that came from a lot of it.
