Better Call Saul season 5: Show EP on planning for the end
Yet, we also know that there are no plans for season 5 to be the end, and despite some of the rumors that are out there, nothing seems 100% decided for season 6 as of yet. What is clear is that now, the writers are starting to get closer to the endgame. This is what show executive producer Peter Gould had to say on the subject via The Hollywood Reporter:
I don’t know about the exact length of the journey, but I will say that for the first time, working on season five, we started to get a feeling for how we were going to end all this and what the end might be. I will say that we frequently have ideas in advance and they don’t end up happening, but I have a feeling in my gut that we have a much better idea of how this all ends, and it’s not incredibly far away.
In our mind, we have a feeling for what we’d like to see happen here — season 6 is the final season for Better Call Saul, and it both begins and ends with longer sequences about the future version of the character in Gene. Doing this allows us to get a better understanding of the character’s story long after becoming Saul and losing him. It also helps to beg the question of whether happiness/redemption is possible for a guy who has done some of the things that Jimmy has done. We know that there is good within him, and we don’t think that he operates with the same deadly intentions all the time of one Walter White. You can make a path to have Jimmy happy at the end of the series, but the question the writers have to figure out is whether or not they want to make him reach the end of said path. There could be a few too many roadblocks along the way for him to handle it.
