Is Elisabeth Moss leaving The Handmaid’s Tale after season 3 finale?

The Handmaid's Tale season 3

The Handmaid’s Tale season 3 finale has now come and gone … and now the wait begins for season 4 as we take some time to think about all the twists and turns that happened this season.

In the video that CarterMatt has for you below, executive producer Bruce Miller breaks down some of the big twists at the heart of the episode, including Serena’s arrest and what happened in regards to Fred. We saw a revenge plot executed, and you have to wonder if there’s going to be a way for Serena to be a part of the show now — or in the lives of several other characters?

Meanwhile, Elisabeth Moss also discusses some of June’s desperation in the episode to try and ensure that she can get some of the kids out at all cost. That cost could include her own life. In the closing minutes of the finale, you see June basically turn her quest into a suicide mission. She passed the point of no return, one where she realized that the only way she was going to get those kids out of Gilead was to create a diversion. As Moss said, she “put herself in the line of fire” in order to ensure some of her goals could be complete.

So is Moss leaving The Handmaid’s Tale on the other side of all of this? Are we done with seeing June on the series once and for all? We think that the finale wants you to be asking these questions to a certain degree, but also remember this — Moss is the show’s biggest name and a performer that it would struggle to not have around. While killing off the character is an ambitious twist, we’re not sure that we see that happening. Instead, there is a story that could be told moving forward about June as even more of a folk hero, someone willing to sacrifice her own soul for the sake of doing whatever needs to be done.

Unfortunately, we may be waiting for a while to see where the story goes from here, but June’s sacrifice should be a central tenet for any future story. Either she dies a legend or lives on to tell the tale.
