Impeachment: American Crime Story sets premiere date, cast at FX

FX has just confirmed that American Crime Story season 3 is happening — beyond just that, we also know the theme!

Today, the cable network confirmed that the new season will be entitled Impeachment: American Crime Story, and will tell the story of Clinton Presidency Scandal and Impeachment. The cast, for now, includes Sarah Paulson as Linda Tripp, Beanie Feldstein as Monica Lewinsky, and Annaleigh Ashford as Paula Jones. Writer Sarah Burgess will serve as an executive producer alongside the incredible team of Ryan Murphy, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Brad Falchuk, Larry Karaszewski, Scott Alexander, Alexis Martin Woodall and Sarah Paulson. Meanwhile, Lewinsky herself will be a producer on the project behind-the-scenes.

What’s also interesting is that this project already has a premiere date: Sunday, September 27, 2020 at 10:00 p.m. Eastern. It’s a little unusual that we’ve got a premiere date for a show more than a year in advance, but here we are.

In a statement, FX Networks Chairman John Landgraf had the following to say on the subject of the series coming back:

“FX’s American Crime Story franchise has become a cultural touchstone, providing greater context for stories that deserve greater understanding like the O.J. Simpson trial and saga, and Andrew Cunanan’s tragic crime spree which concluded with the assassination of Gianni Versace … This franchise re-examines some of the most complicated, polarizing stories in recent history in a way that is relevant, nuanced and entertaining.

“Impeachment: American Crime Story will likewise explore the overlooked dimensions of the women who found themselves caught up in the scandal and political war that cast a long shadow over the Clinton Presidency. We are grateful to Sarah Burgess for her brilliant adaptation, as well as Ryan Murphy, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Brad Falchuk, Larry Karaszewski, Scott Alexander, Alexis Martin Woodall, Sarah Paulson and the rest of the creative team and cast.”

We do think that there will be attention surrounding the series — with the talent involved, it’s hard not to think about that. We do wonder whether or not anyone was really asking for a series all about that, but it’s something that will probably deliver big numbers anyway. The first two seasons, The People v. OJ Simpson and also The Assassination of Gianni Versace, were both also big hits.
