Grey’s Anatomy season 16: ABC exec hopes for many more seasons

Grey's Anatomy season 14

Even though there’s a relatively-new face fronting ABC in Karey Burke, she has the same perspective towards the future of Grey’s Anatomy as a number of other people who came before her: She wants to see it stick around for as long as humanly possible.

While at the TCA Summer Press Tour earlier today, Burke made it clear that so long as Shonda Rhimes and Ellen Pompeo are still enthusiastic about the series, new episodes will continue to be made. She (per Deadline) doesn’t have any personal desire to see it come to a close anytime soon:

We love them. They are as deep a part of the fabric of ABC as anyone and certainly it will be up to them whether or not they want to continue the show. I hope I’m watching with my grandchildren.

There is, at least as of right now, no real reason to end Grey’s Anatomy in terms of its success. It remains one of ABC’s highest-rated dramas and it continues to bring in new viewers thanks to Netflix, even so many seasons in. A part of ABC’s desire to keep it around may also be to the differing climate in the world of TV now, as opposed to what’s been out there before. They recognize that there is no fundamental replacement that they will be able to find for it. New shows these days don’t accumulate this sort of stable audience and stick around for years on end. It doesn’t happen, even if so many of us would like for it to happen. With that in mind, networks gotta keep the megahits they can however long it’s possible.

So how long does Pompeo want to do this show? Thanks to a contract extension signed earlier this year, she’s good to remain on board until season 17 (which hasn’t been technically renewed yet). At this point, though, it’s really all about the love of the role for her. Grey’s Anatomy doesn’t have anything to prove to anyone — it’s the longest-running medical drama ever and it’s one of the most-watched shows of a generation. While we suppose that it could compete for the second-longest drama in primetime TV history, it would need to run for five more seasons beyond this current one. (We say second-longest because Law & Order: SVU is still running and it’s entering season 21 — there’s no sign that it is about to slow down.)
