Sci-Fi Character Battle: Clarke Griffin, Wynonna Earp, The Doctor, Ben Stone, Ed Mercer, & Daryl Dixon

The Doctor

Welcome to the Sci-Fi Character Battle, a new CarterMatt Feature for the month of August! Over the past several years, sci-fi is a genre that has become so diverse and also so fantastic. You’ve got now shows about space travel, zombies, time-travel, angels, demons, artificial intelligence, and a whole lot more! Within this series, we’re going to do our part to spotlight many of the best characters within the genre … and then ask which ones you like the best.

Below, you can see the first six of 24 characters we’re spotlighting in Round One of the polling tournament! We’ll be posting the next 18 throughout the next few days. We’ll be sharing what makes each character special and then, beyond that, there is a poll for you to vote for your favorite! Two characters will move on to round two.

Voting Rules – Voting will remain open until Sunday, August 11 at 3:00 p.m. Pacific time; the advancing characters will move on two round 2, which will begin on August 12. You can vote however often you’d like; for more technical information if you’re having issues, check out the bottom of this article.

Clarke Griffin, The 100 – This season’s been an exceptional look into humanity and then also how one identifies yourself when faced when incredible odds. Clarke, in between Sanctum and also the Josephine battle, has been through more this year than almost ever before. We’ve seen her heart, her passion, and her determination almost constantly. We’re very excited to see where things wind up.

Ed Mercer, The Orville – Ed’s a brilliant Captain in terms of getting out of tight binds, but at this point it’s clear that he doesn’t do it alone. He’s a flawed character who constantly makes mistakes, but then pivots at the right time. He’s funny, romantic, and also at times oblivious. At first glance, he feels like a prototypical space captain; what makes him special is when you look underneath.

Wynonna Earp, Wynonna Earp – Writing that twice was kinda of redundant, but she is the title hero and the signature character of this show. She’s also a fantastic action hero, while at the same time relatable and funny. She pushes herself to the limit in order to save those close to her, but she doesn’t lose her humanity at any step in the process.

Daryl Dixon, The Walking Dead – Daryl’s not one for always speaking a lot of words, but that’s a part of what makes him interesting. He’s an introspective character with a lot of demons but still a desire to make the world better — just in his own way. He’s also perfectly-played by Norman Reedus, who understands why this character is so embraced.

Ben Stone, Manifest – We’re still only one season in to this series, but Josh Dallas’ Ben is a big driver of the overall story. He’s one of the passengers on flight 828 still trying to figure out what happened to him, in addition to the grander design for both himself and his family. He oscillates between trying to be a hero and, understandably, just trying to spend time with his family.

The Doctor, Doctor Who – By far the longest-tenured character on this list! While Jodie Whittaker may be the current performer behind the role, we’ve seen so many iterations now and all of them are special. The Doctor is whimsical, determined, heartfelt at times, and then also ruthless at others. They are a conduit of imagination that you rarely see elsewhere.

Now, let’s turn this over to you

Who is your favorite character? Be sure to share in the comments, and stick around for some more updates.

I can’t see the poll; what do I do? – If you are on mobile, scroll to the bottom of the page and click to view the non-AMP version. If that does not work, give the poll a moment to load! On some mobile browsers, it may take a moment.

How can I vote more than once? – If you are having trouble casting multiple votes, try switching your browser, your device, or visiting the page under private browsing or incognito mode. There should be many handy guides online explaining how to do so if interested.
