The Handmaid’s Tale season 3 finale spoilers: Cliffhanger incoming…

Just in case you were hoping that The Handmaid’s Tale season 3 was going to offer up any sense of closure for some of its core characters … prepare yourself now for some disappointment. Based on what we’re getting a sense of now, the season 3 finale is going to leave you anxious for whatever is coming next in the upcoming fourth season. (If you missed it, the series was recently renewed for more new episodes by Hulu.)

Speaking in a new interview on the subject of the future with TV Guide, here is some of what executive producer Warren Littlefield had to say on the subject:

“I hope you’ll feel shocked at what we accomplish and where we leave our key characters … I think it’s quite a cliffhanger that we’ll leave you with. And I feel quite confident that if we had a 40 percent leap [in viewership] from Year 2 to Year 3, I’m looking forward to what that leap will be in Year 4.”

We’re happy that Littlefield seems to think that there will be another leap from one season to the next but, at the moment, we’re not counting on that. Viewers do tend to discover streaming shows over time, but no doubt season 3 has been polarizing so far. While The Handmaid’s Tale has always been a grim show, there are questions out there as to whether or not this season is perhaps a little too grim for its own good. Is there a way to make things a little bit cheerier?

For a little more news about where June is at the moment leading up to her big plan (read more about that over here), here is some of what Littlefield had to say:

“What we’re seeing is that June no longer considers herself an other … She may still wear the robe of a handmaid, but she’s asserting herself. What you’ll see between now and the end of the season is her being less obedient to authority, being more assertive, and she co-opts Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) into her vision and her plan and that’s just starting to unfold, but it’s a snowball rolling down a mountain. It’s just getting bigger and bigger and bigger, and she’s going to be a force to be reckoned with. I think […] it’s a tipping point and a turning point in that relationship, and it’s unexpected. I’m excited about what we’re about to present.”

With this in mind, the June we see in The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 could be far and away different from the one we had back in season 1.
