New Gossip Girl a continuation, not remake; original stars invited
Rather, show executive producer Josh Schwartz made it clear today at TCA (where is promoting his Hulu project Looking For Alaska) that this is more of a continuation of the original story — there isn’t a desire to just create new versions of people who are already out there. Here is some of what he had to say on that subject (via TVLine):
“There aren’t, like, new actors playing Serena and Blair. It’s not a remake. [It’s] a continuation of that world … We’ve reached out to all of them to let them know it was happening, and we would love for them to be involved if they want to be involved. But [we] certainly didn’t want to make it contingent upon their [participation]. They played those characters for six years, and if they felt like they were good with that, we wanted to respect that. But obviously, it would be great to see them again.”
We know that at the end of the original Gossip Girl, some of the talent involved was eager to move forward and do other things; Lively was in the middle of a career on the rise, and now, several other cast members have full-time series gigs elsewhere. If we were to see some of these people again, we don’t imagine that they would be full-time characters. We’re not even sure that a new version of Gossip Girl will even work. This was a show for a very particular generation and we’re also not altogether sure if there is all that much of a desire to revisit it. It would be one thing if viewers could watch it on the original CW; it’s another to have it air on a streaming service that viewers have to pay a good bit of money for, given that plans suggest it may be bundled with HBO.
