Big Little Lies season 2 finale ratings make a big case for season 3

Big Little Lies

The first Big Little Lies season 2 finale ratings are in over at HBO, and upon first glance, it’s not too hard to figure out that the network would love a season 3.

After all, just think about the live numbers alone! This episode drew 1.98 million viewers, up versus the season 1 finale. This marks the highest-rated episode of the show we’ve seen so far and it does prove further that even some of the more polarizing parts of this season (what was going on with Madeline’s storyline?) didn’t have that big of an impact on things in terms of the show’s success.

Here’s another important part of this to remember — HBO’s getting way more viewers than this 1.98 million. It doesn’t include streams, DVR viewership, or repeats.

In live viewing alone, season 2 of Big Little Lies improved itself by more than 40% versus season 1. That’s something that the network can be proud of and it’s a real testament to both the show’s quality and the star power. Yet, it by no means guarantees more; at the moment, it feels like there won’t be anymore and the final moment we were left on is the Monterey Five entering the police station. The first season told the story of everything that led to Perry’s death; meanwhile, the second season told the story of why these women ended up going to that police station. From there, everything could be left up to the imagination.

If there was a third season, what would that look like? A lot of it could just consistent of interrogations and eventually more courtroom scenes, and we’re not sure that Big Little Lies wants to do that given that we just went through all of that with Celeste at the end of this season. We aren’t tuning in because this is a courtroom drama, we tune in because we love the secrets and lies feel of this show.

The biggest problem with making a season 3 isn’t money or scheduling; it’s having the right story. If that happens and the cast does become available, we’re sure that more could come about. Trying to find a way to justify this season may be a challenge given that it would either be all about the police investigation, or all about figuring out a way in which to reset the story altogether.
