The Hills: New Beginnings renewed for season 2 by MTV
Today, the network confirmed that they are bringing back the reality series for another batch of episodes, and just a handful of weeks into the revival’s new run. The Hills: New Beginnings features a number of the original Hills’ cast members, whether it be Spencer Pratt, Heidi Montag, Brody Jenner, Audrina Patridge, and many more. There are also some notable new arrivals, including Mischa Barton. The show has captured the DNA of the original — it’s about getting to know the people, but also experiencing the lifestyle. While the world is much more social-media friendly than it was when the original show came on the air, we don’t think that The Hills has been set up to be altogether different now.
Ratings-wise, The Hills: New Beginnings has not been an enormous smash, with its numbers falling behind some big cable series on other networks. However, it is roughly in line with some other MTV shows in terms of live viewing and just being solid is enough to have it back for more. Remember that a show like The Hills: New Beginnings may also be generating a lot of viewership after the fact via DVR/streaming. The vast majority of television shows that are out there are in a similar boat at this point.
Based on the timing of this renewal, our feeling is that The Hills: New Beginnings season 2 would premiere at some point in 2020. This show now joins Jersey Shore Family Vacation as a part of MTV’s full commitment to nostalgia. It’s one thing to do a one-season revival; it’s another altogether to make it into something that lasts for years on end. This could be a show that has a few more years’ worth of life left in it, depending of course on what happens to some of the people. To a certain extent, the success of the show is dependent on some of the drama.
