Riverdale season 4 spoilers: Shannen Doherty appearing in premiere
While at the series’ San Diego Comic-Con panel, executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa made it clear that the former Beverly Hills, 90210 star is going to be appearing in a special role meant to help tribute her longtime friend Luke Perry. This was a move to help give the premiere even more power, and it was a role that producers really wanted Doherty to play. According to TVLine, here is some of what Aguirre-Sacasa had to say:
“They were such good friends, and when we were putting together this tribute episode, we wanted to make it as special as possible, and so we asked Shannen to do a pivotal, super-emotional role … She read the script and immediately said ‘yes.’ It’s very impactful.”
This may just be a one-episode role meant to honor Fred Andrews, but sometimes a lot can be done in a short period of time.
The decision to treat the premiere as a tribute to Perry’s character was one that was months in the making. Because of the timing of Perry’s tragic death, it was difficult to go back in and rewrite the remaining episodes in a way that included a proper tribute. However, the team had more time over the past few months to come up with a more appropriate idea and that is something that we will see delivered when the show returns this fall.
Throughout the past few months, we have heard nothing other than the notion of Perry as a wonderful colleague and great mentor to a number of the show’s younger cast members. He remembered what it was like becoming a star overnight on a show and how challenging it can be to navigate some of those waters. We don’t think that Riverdale is ever going to forget him, regardless of however long the show ends up lasting.
There will be other announcements coming for Riverdale in the weeks and months to come; for example, in the wake of losing Perry, we wouldn’t be shocked if Molly Ringwald has a larger role.
