Community movie dream crumbles, MIA from Russo Brothers SDCC panel

Community -

Is a Community movie coming together after all of these years? That was the big question leading into Joe and Anthony Russo’s San Diego Comic-Con panel, and the only reason why anyone was speculating about it at all was of their own doing. These two were the ones who generated a lot of the speculation on the backs of posting a sound clip of Troy and Abed from the first season on social media. Many online, including us, thought that this was a sly way of them encouraging people to either attend the panel or keep up to date with what’s coming.

So while the Avengers: Endgame directors did announce some of their upcoming projects at SDCC, the Community movie was as absent as Troy Barnes during the show’s final season. We’re almost as upset now as when Troy was forced to meet LeVar Burton.

Why did the Russo Brothers tease the panel with Troy and Abed’s Spanish rap then? It was probably just a clever nod to their past working on the show, where they were directors/executive producers for so many years. It’s crazy to think of all of the talent on Community in retrospect — the Russo Brothers, Joel McHale, Danny Pudi, Ken Jeong, Donald Glover, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, John Oliver, Paget Brewster, Keith David, Jim Rash, Yvette Nicole Brown, Eric Christian Olsen, and many others were involved in it over the course of its run. There are Oscar winners, Grammy winners, and Emmy winners in that group — it’s basically a Tony win away from an EGOT.

In some unfortunate ways, it’s the incredible popularity of the show’s cast that makes it so difficult for a Community movie to ever happen — they all have other projects. Heck, Glover’s voicing Simba in the Lion King movie! (Also, Oliver’s voicing Zazu, but he wasn’t a major player in the latter seasons of the show.) We do think that it’s eventually possible for it to happen, but it would take some schedule wizardry and we don’t want to see something pieced together using just half of the cast. We’d prefer most of the group come back — it’s fine if Chevy Chase isn’t there.

Do you still believe in a Community movie?
