Big Little Lies season 3 ‘not realistic,’ says HBO boss despite ratings
Speaking via TVLine, the network’s programming head Casey Bloys made it clear that it was fortuitous that the cast was able to get together for another batch of episodes — doing it for a third go-around would be almost a miracle:
“I love this group of people – I would do anything with them … But the reality is, they are some of the busiest actresses working in Hollywood. We have deals with some of them — Nicole [Kidman] is doing her next show [The Undoing] with us. I just think it’s not realistic.
“Look, if they all came to me and said, ‘We worked out all of our schedules!’ – then sure … But I just don’t think it’s realistic.”
It’s true that all of these cast members are busy doing dozens of other things — Reese Witherspoon, for example, has some upcoming projects with Hulu and Apple, in addition to whatever movie roles end up coming her way. That’s without even bringing in Kidman, Shailene Woodley, and the rest of the cast.
The reality of this situation is that Witherspoon, Kidman, and some of the other original Big Little Lies cast members signed on to this show thinking that it would be a one-season gig. They weren’t interested in the idea of doing some traditional six-season television deal; if they were, they probably would’ve done that years ago. We could foresee a situation in which a third season does happen in due time, but it may not be for years.
Maybe the best comparison for Big Little Lies at the moment, at least in terms of another successful show that it could mimic format-wise, is Sherlock. That is a show that has successfully aired four seasons already and could come back for a fifth down the road, but there is no hurry and it could be years. Season 4 of it ended in a way that offered up some closure, and it feels as though (at least right now) that Big Little Lies season 3 is going to have a similar sort of ending when the dust settles. If they wanted to come back years later, viewers would be there in a hot minute without skipping a beat. The show is just too good!
