Doctor Who season 12: Series boss on Judoon’s return

After opting to not bring forward too many classic characters entering Doctor Who last season, show executive producer Chris Chibnall is changing course. You’re going to see at least one iconic monster during the upcoming season itself in the Judoon, and there could be some more that follow. We don’t need the entire upcoming twelfth season to be a tribute to every single creature and character who has ever come on the show, but we would appreciate an opportunity to see at least a few other familiar faces at some point during the events to come.

For now, though, let’s just focus our energy on those aforementioned Judoon! There is a reason to be excited with them coming back onto the series, especially now that we’ve got to see what Chibnall has to say about them. Just take a look at what he had to say in a new piece with Doctor Who Magazine:

“The Judoon are back. I love typing those words … From the moment I broke the news to people within the production (producer Nikki Wilson whooped with delight when I told her), through the tone meeting, readthrough, and now watching the glorious rushes coming in, we’ve all had Judoon-based grins on our faces.

“Knowing that we’d be filming in broad daylight with Judoon on the streets of Gloucester, we made a plan to release an official photo with the Doctor (oof, she looks cross, why would she be looking cross?) the night before.”

The Judoon’s presence is going to be entertaining no matter how long they are around for, mostly because it’s a notable adversary and it’s also a great chance for the effects team to have a little bit of fun and test their creativity with a modern-day recreation. We don’t think that it benefits the show to do an enormous recreation of the original version, but a few little tweaks here and there would be something that we’d welcome.
