Better Call Saul season 5: Will the second ex-wife be addressed?
Yet, there is one major question that still needs to be addressed: What happened to Jimmy’s multiple ex-wives? If you think back to Breaking Bad, there is somewhat of a throwaway line from the Saul character where he mentions his second ex having a thing with his stepfather. It’s not something we’ve really thought about for the bulk of the series, but no doubt, it’s still something we’ve been left to wonder over these past several years.
(For those who are wondering, Jimmy’s first ex was alluded to earlier on in the series, suggesting that he was married once before the start of season 1 — we’re not sure that this is an era that will ever be fully explored.)
So moving into season 5, will the second ex finally enter the equation? The obvious candidate for it is Kim Wexler, just because she’s really the only woman in Jimmy’s life at the moment; yet, logically it doesn’t seem like Kim’s the sort of person to do something like this with Jimmy’s stepfather … who, for the record, has been MIA throughout the series as well. All of it feels out of character and we almost wonder instead if Jimmy ends up having a quickie wedding with someone he barely knows over the next season or two and then it ends horribly. This is something that we could see him doing after a potential Kim exit to try and make himself feel better, only for it to end in total disaster.
Of course, there’s another interesting theory here, as well. What if Saul’s initial line about the second ex was a throwaway? What if there’s no real logic to anything he said there at all? It’s absolutely possible that he was just making something up for the heck of it, given that Saul is a fictional character with presumably, his own backstory. There’s a sense of fun that could come from that, since it would give the writers a blank canvas to effectively create their own, totally-new character within this world.
How to address the second ex
If we see Jimmy get married, it’s clearly addressed. If we don’t, this could be taken on just by seeing Saul make up some other falsehoods as his characters to other people. This would tell us everything we need to know in regards to the character’s backstory or lack thereof.
