The Spanish Princess episode 6 preview: ‘A Polite Kidnapping’

The Spanish Princess

If it feels to anyone else as though The Spanish Princess is only beginning, the following news is going to make you sad: It’s almost at the end. There are only a handful of installments left to go this season, and that includes “A Polite Kidnapping” next week.

Fundamentally, you can expect this installment to carry through some of the important central tenets that we saw for the bulk of the first five episodes — namely, politics and trying to find a way to allow these characters to navigate a delicate political system. The actions of one Catherine of Aragon are complicated, but a lot of them stem from one clear motivation at this point: Sitting atop a throne. This is a woman who has certainly gone through quite a bit to date in the series, and we certainly think that she wants to just stop where she is now. You don’t go through the process of leaving your home, starting somewhere else, and dealing with (at times) horrible people to settle for something that you don’t want.

Unfortunately for her, the problems that she faces in this next new episode are very much different from anything else that she has. Take, for example, trying to come to terms with a perceived change in her status — if the presumption is that Catherine no longer holds the same political weight that she once did, is she as viable a contender for an alliance by marriage? Another potential issue arriving is the threat of France. They’re somewhat of a key cog between England and Spain, and the best way in order to protect Spain is to cultivate more of a firm alliance between the country and with England — virtually by whatever means is humanly possible.

Expect to see Catherine battling with the idea of what it means to keep fighting within this episode — and as this story goes along, one of the things we’re probably going to experience a little bit more of is the general unease of where this is all ultimately going. The Spanish Princess, like so many other stories within the historical realm, is so greatly informed by precisely how it ends. In this particular case, we know where Catherine is eventually going to be with Henry VIII … all of the political movement that we’re seeing here is mostly for the purpose of learning how we get there. We’re intrigued by just how much ground the final episodes are apparently going to cover.
