Britain’s Got Talent final: Who is X? Meet Marc Spelmann
At the end of the performance tonight, the mystery magician finally removed the mask and as it turns out, it was Marc Spelmann the whole time. The magician was Ant and Dec’s Golden Buzzer from last year but this time around, he decided to come back anonymous. He didn’t want any sort of sympathy or backstory and just wanted to do something crazy, unique, and unexpected. This proved to be that, but also so powerful and different from anything that we’ve seen before on the show.
What was so amazing about X’s performance tonight was how he found a way to get all of the audience involved in precisely what he did — the guessing game that led to the word “Hope” was remarkable — we’ll tell you that we tried as hard as possible to pick a random word so that we didn’t end up landing on hope, but it still happened. We’re sure that this was designed for you to always land there, but that’s not the point. There’s always a method behind the madness. The madness is more how he set this up and delivered it and gave us that feeling of being completely and utterly SHOOK. That doesn’t happen all that much for us as a viewer.

After this performance, we do think that X/Spelmann has a legitimately good chance of winning the whole competition. He’s created something here that is so unique and while we do think it would’ve been fun if he kept the identity a secret and just toured around the country with it, we think the reason he didn’t was so that he could loop this entire act around his experiences at the start of last season. It did add that much more weight to everything — apparently, he had originally planned the “hope” reveal from last season to be included in his final performance had he made it there, but since he didn’t, he had something that he was able to use this time.
This was remarkable — so much so that it takes away some of our unease about someone who made the live shows last year being able to come back and perform again. He does have a leg up because he’s well known from that already, but the quality of the act this time is still outstanding and he deserves commendation for that.
