Britain’s Got Talent final: Libby & Charlie on board as wildcard

Alesha Dixon Golden Buzzer

As we look ahead to the Britain’s Got Talent final airing on ITV tomorrow, it does feel like now is the perfect time to talk the wild card. After all, it was first announced on Friday that Libby and Charlie are going to have an opportunity to dance again in this final stage of the competition!

So was this the right choice for the judges to make? It certainly is the one that’s going to inspire a lot of debate. We don’t necessarily think that Libby and Charlie had the most Innovative act in the history of Britain’s Got Talent, and nor do we think they’re the best of the acts who didn’t move on. They’re a young ballroom dancing duo, and we’ve absolutely seen many a dancer on the show over time. With that being said, it’s kind of hard to hate on two young people who are this good at what they do, and seem to be inspiring other people to want to do the same.

We really see the judges’ decision here is being kind of twofold. For starters, there aren’t a whole lot of other dance acts in the final, and we think that a good part of this was based on having as much variety in this round is humanly possible. When you look at a lot of the other possible wildcard contenders, a good many of them are magic acts, and we have a ton of magic acts in the finale already. We think that for Britain’s Got Talent, diversity is king, and we’re not just talking about the act Diversity. They like to throw lots of different stuff at you!

The other simple reason for their selection is that they are talented, there’s no need to be overly cynical or put on a giant conspiracy cap and claim anything otherwise. (We hear you, people who claim that the show is biased towards kids.) The producers and the judges don’t want someone in the final who’s going to be terrible and taint the reputation of the show. (Yes, we know that there are a lot of people out there who will claim that the reputation of it was tainted a long time ago anyway.)

As happy as we are for Libby and Charlie, we don’t exactly think that they’re going to be huge contenders to win this whole competition. It’s just hard to imagine that there is going to be a way to get people to rally behind them now in a way that they did not for their previous performance. It would make for an incredible comeback story, without a doubt, but we gotta live somewhat within the realm of reality.
