Is Empire new tonight on Fox? What we’re building to now

Empire season 4 episode 1

Is Empire new tonight on Fox? Judging from the way the past episode of the series ending, we certainly do think that there’s going to be some excitement around getting some answers. Take, for example, when Lucious is going to be back, if Andre is going to be okay after the transplant, and what Cookie’s immediate future is now going to look like.

Unfortunately, you’re not getting those answers now, and you’re also not getting those answers anytime soon, either. There is no new episode of the series on the air tonight; instead, you’re going to be waiting until we get around to the fall for them — last week was, in fact, the season 5 finale, and if you haven’t heard just yet, season 6 is going to be the final one on Fox.

So what do we know at the moment about the final season of Empire? For starters, that it’s going to be moving to a new timeslot in Tuesdays at 9:00 p.m. Eastern, following The Resident season 3. Meanwhile, there are no plans in the near future to bring back Jussie Smollett as Jamal, but it doesn’t necessarily seem like it’s something that Fox is completely shutting the door on either. That’s just something to keep in the back of your mind for another time, possibly closer to the end of the series.

We think that within the early going of season 6, Lucious is going to have to contend with his own identity one more time. He’s a guy who has found so much of what he could have always wanted — think in terms of money, power, and influence. He’s had the empire mentioned in the title! However, in doing that, there has been a pretty steep cost for him, mostly in that he hasn’t been able to do every little thing for his family. He hasn’t been there — he wasn’t for Kingsley much of his life, and now, he’s skipping down at a time when Andre is going to need more love than ever. Cookie is conscious of this, and that’s why she doesn’t leave. Lucious needs to figure out if there is a way for someone like him to have redemption — and, if not, will he just go to the other extreme instead.

There is a lot of time left for a number of key questions to be asked, but we also do hope within the process of this that there’s a chance for a little more music — after all, that has been at the forefront of the show.
