Lethal Weapon canceled at Fox; no season 4 coming
It looks like Lethal Weapon isn’t going to have another kick at the can, at least on Fox, after a crazy third season.
Fox is canceling the drama after what has certainly been a tumultuous past year or so on the air, one that included the firing of original star Clayne Crawford and the casting of Seann William Scott. While there was a viewership out there still for the third season, the average ratings were down and with so much changing leadership at Fox, it’s clear the network wants to go in a new direction. They’ve picked up a number of new series and also canceled many others, including The Passage and The Cool Kids already. Proven Innocent has been considered dead for some time, and The Gifted is also not coming back.

In addition to the ratings for Lethal Weapon going down, we do think that the series was also hurt rather dramatically by the fact that it’s a fairly-costly show that comes via an outside studio in Warner Bros. TV — though, to be fair, Fox doesn’t have much of an in-house studio anymore given that 20th Century Fox TV is now a Disney property. It’s a show that does have brand recognition because of the movies, but that only goes so far. It certainly has been one of the most divisive series on the air the past year — we’re certainly that we’re going to hear from a number of people who either loved the new iteration or hated it without Martin Riggs on board.
With the end of Lethal Weapon in mind, the remaining question marks are STAR and The Orville, at least among the ones that we’re currently tracking. These are decisions that, clearly, are going down to the wire.
Could Lethal Weapon be saved?
In theory, sure, but it’s hard to know what the venue would be. It’s far too pricey for cable with its current budget, and the ratings are too long for another broadcast network to be altogether interested. It may have been a better fit from the start for a network like CBS who is more into crime shows with a sometimes-comedic twist, but there’s no walking that decision back now.
