Game of Thrones season 8 episode 4 review: Rhaegarl, Missandei, Daenerys, & woe
The first major death that transpires in episode 4 was not actually a human one — instead, it was Rhaegal, one of Daenerys’ two living dragons. Remember when everyone thought that she lost a dragon last week? Well, that happened tonight, when poor Rhaegal was shot out of the sky by none other than Euron aboard one of his ships. Daenerys made a decision to head towards King’s Landing a little bit earlier than expected, and in doing so, maybe she led herself into a trap.
In general, this is the episode where Daenerys’ battle strategy really has to come into question — and for a number of different reasons. She was a little too keen on having to charge into King’s Landing and allow innocent people to die. Varys decided to do everything within his power to convince her to think differently and she didn’t. Amidst the early invasion, Missandei also found herself taken and because of that, it put Daenerys’ team in a rather uncomfortable position — as they tried their hand at diplomacy, they didn’t exactly have a whole lot of leverage.

Nonetheless, Tyrion tried his best. He spoke to Qyburn outside of the King’s Landing gates and did everything within his power to get him to see a different side. When that didn’t work, Tyrion went to Cersei herself. He pleaded with her to show off a different side, one that he knew was very much within her. He’d seen it, and hoped to get that out of her.
Unfortunately, Tyrion’s attempts were in vain. He hasn’t had the best luck with some of his strategic salvos as of late, and that was proven further with Cersei deciding to have Missandei killed at the conclusion of the episode. She let The Mountain do the deed in front of not just Daenerys’ army, but also Grey Worm, the man who loved her and would do anything for her.
This execution will be the one that starts the war — it has to. There’s no turning back now and it’s hard to imagine a way in which there would be.
Other odds and ends
Well, there is certainly a lot of other interesting content in here, isn’t there? Take, for starters, word getting out thanks to Jon that he is really Aegon Targeryan. This was further fuel to Sansa’s fire that she didn’t just want to concede the North to Daenerys no matter what was going on within the world.
Meanwhile, Arya decided that she didn’t want to just run off with Gendry and be married with him as a Lady. Brienne and Jaime finally hooked up and it seemed like we were going to get a real, genuine romantic bond — but that was of course before Jaime pulled his trademark Jaime move and left, effectively shattering her heart. Why does he keep doing that?
CarterMatt Verdict
We knew that Game of Thrones season 8 episode 4 would have to get to King’s Landing quickly and tonight, they certainly did that. Yet, it also gave us a pretty clear reminder that while there were a number of victories last week, there weren’t too many this time around. Instead, we saw chaos, destruction, and a promise that things were going to get bloody and we’d be steeped in tragedy once more. Those drinking parties at the start of the episod really now seem to be forever away.
