911 season 2 episode 17 spoilers: Is Maddie leaving the call center?

At the end of 911 season 1, we saw the departure of one employee from the call center in Abby. Is it possible that there could be another departure at the end of season 2? The early information about “Careful What You Wish For” at least wants to do its part in order to make you nervous. The producers behind the Fox clearly want to unsettle you and given our history losing important characters already, it makes sense that they want to rattle some cages.

So why are we so nervous about all of this? We promise, we’re not just pulling something out of thin air! The official 911 season 2 episode 17 synopsis offers up a little more information about what you can expect to see:

The first responders deal with a calamity at a chocolate factory and a mail bomb explosion. Meanwhile, Eddie receives some surprising news from Shannon, Maddie contemplates her future in the call center and tragedy strikes the 118 in the all-new “Careful What You Wish For” episode of 9-1-1 airing Monday, May 6 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. (NIN-217) (TV-14 D, L, V)

Of course, Maddie “contemplating” her future within the call center does not equate to Jennifer Love Hewitt leaving the show. Even if she did depart that job, aren’t there some other jobs that she could choose to take on? In general, we do wonder if working at the call center is one of the most challenging writing challenges of a show like this, given that it’s harder to show variety when so much of the job is sitting in one place responding to various calls. It’s all dialogue and when you develop a routine with said dialogue, that is an incredibly hard thing to be able to then shake off a little bit after the fact.

As for what is coming up, typically you’d like to think of a calamity at a chocolate factory as a good thing, right? If nothing else, it’s something that sounds and feels like it’d be incredibly tasty … but this is going to be a little bit dire. Then, there’s the idea of tragedy “striking” the 118 and then you’re starting to think that the writers are really serving stuff at you in just about every direction. At a certain point, aren’t you starting to feel like they just want to torment you with all of this sadness? We still think after what we went through with cHimney and then Maddie a little bit earlier this season, there should be some sort of waiting period before the 9-1-1 writers are allowed to throw anything excessively crazy at us again. That’d at least be nice, wouldn’t it?
