Saturday Night Live video: Emma Stone – BTS expectations

Tonight’s new episode of Saturday Night Live features host Emma Stone and also musical guest BTS — basically, it feels like there are higher expectations for this episode than almost any other in months. That’s at least the internet perception anyway, given how rare it is for the show to have international singing stars really at the peak of their popularity. BTS are one of the most popular groups in the entire world performing on SNL for the first time, and clearly, the producers are aware of their status of a marketing powerhouse. Just look at the way in which this episode is being promoted!

It’s actually quite weird when you think about it. Emma Stone is one of the most accomplished actors working today — she’s got a tremendous following and is fiercely likable. She’s also hosted this show many times; yet, it feels like she’s being totally upstaged entering this episode by BTS. That shows both their power as a group but also her humility.

The reality is that Stone is probably going to kill it tonight and she’s probably aware as a person that she doesn’t need a surge of promotion or anything entering the episode. She’s shown so many times on SNL already that one of her biggest assets is how much of a team player she is. She’s someone who is going to work to fit her way into just about every sketch no matter the environment and no matter what is happening around her. She’ll be great — there’s a reason why she has been asked back to perform so many times.

Will BTS appear in a sketch?

We do think that it’s likely, if for no other reason than that the producers are probably going to find a way in order to fit them in. The ability of them to create a viral moment is not to be under-estimated; we just hope that the writers have a good idea and they’re just not shoehorned somewhere so that it seems obvious that it’s just “hey, let’s put BTS in a sketch for the sake of the YouTube hits.” We think that they could easily do some sort of fun send-up of their local music scene, or maybe play some wacky characters who are the total opposite of what we know them to be.

One safe bet is that they could all be featured in a pre-taped sketch, one where they can be presented in the best possible light and with an idea where they can show off some of their musical talents.
