Empire season 5 episode 15 preview: Will Andre be okay?

Next week, Empire season 5 episode 15 is bringing you a story that is as personal and emotional as it gets. We’ve seen suffering on this show many times before, but what makes Andre’s particular brand of it different is the slowness of it. This isn’t just something that is manifesting overnight, popping in, and saying “hello.” The nature of his sickness is draining and difficult — it’s hard for him, but then it’s also hard for his family. It doesn’t matter just how much money, power, or influence the Lyons have had over time. The only thing that does matter is if there’s a way for him to recover, and there’s no real way to know that for now.

Of course, the uncertainty surrounding the end of this season and the specter of death that’s been around since the beginning of it is only adding to the sense of pain with the Andre character. You can’t feel good about where things are with him … but you certainly can’t feel good about some other characters, either. That’s without even getting too far down the Jussie Smollett rabbit hole.

As the Feds close in on Empire, Jeff Kingsley seeks the truth about what really happened between Lucious and Tracy Kingsley (guest star Amanda Detmer). Meanwhile, Teri (guest star Meta Golding) and the Lyons pray for Andre’s health, and Cookie faces the truth about her relationship with Damon Cross (guest star Wood Harris). Jamal and Kai reach an understanding, while Hakeem attempts to figure out where he stands among his relationships in the all-new “A Wise Father That Knows His Own Child” episode of EMPIRE airing Wednesday, April 17 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. Four episodes. That’s how much more time we’ve got to get answers, and also how much time Empire has to set up whatever its next phase of operation is going to be. We’re at a point where this show, separate from Andre and his own death mystery, has to be thinking about more of its own mortality. Its ratings aren’t what they were, and its story isn’t getting the same buzz. A good 99% of its headlines this year have been wholly unrelated to what’s happening onscreen. While we think that the show’s coming back for more (nothing is official at the moment), there are probably going to need to be some tough conversations about the endgame … and if it’s possible for some of these characters to ever have some peace. We’re not sure that it is.

Yet, for now, as viewers we just have to push something slightly back in our head … and focus on what’s directly in front of us.
