Saturday Night Live – Emma Stone promo: Waiting for BTS
It’s not all that often that SNL promotes the musical guest on the same level as the host, but it’s also not all that often that your musical guests are the most famous boy band in the entire world at the moment. BTS is enormously successful all over Korea, but they have become a genuine crossover artist that we don’t often see stateside. Psy was one of the biggest pioneers in this field over the past ten years, but this group in particular has made the jump over in earnest where the popularity transcends just one or two hits. They are a group that consistently sells out arenas all over America, let alone in some other locales all over the world.

We know that BTS will have most likely a couple of performance spots during the episode, but what about something more? After watching the promo below, which features Stone and some of the show’s female cast members having a sleepover in preparation for their gig, you almost have to wonder if the writers are going to find a way to incorporate them into a sketch or two. If they can find the right comedic angle, it would be smart to include them. Think of how this could boost the live ratings for SNL all over the world, plus bring even more viewership and attention to their social channels. Booking BTS is a play to get SNL more on a global stage than it’s been in a while. Maybe this show does have a number of loyal super-fans all over the world, but as an American it’s always been hard to view it through more of an international lens. The only thing we’ve been able to say with confidence is that this is a show that often has captured the zeitgeist of an era better than others, and it’s almost with that you have to wonder why BTS has not performed on the show before? It’s hardly like they just burst onto the stage in the past month or so with an attitude of “look how great we are and we’re going to stay”.
Stone is the right host to usher these guys into SNL lore — she’s a giving performer who doesn’t really make things all about herself and beyond just that, she’s a hosting veteran at this point. Because she’s done this show before she may not be so eager to just gulp up the lion’s share of the headlines. Her objective may just be to come back, perform with some of her favorite cast members, and have a good time on a show that always loves to have her.
If you missed it…
