The Orville season 2 finale spoilers: ‘The Road Not Taken’

Orville

Today, Fox revealed some of the first details from the upcoming The Orville season 2 finale, and based on the information that we’ve got, it looks to be tying together some events from the episode before.

If you missed it, we’ve already written a little bit about the events of the penultimate episode of the season, one where you’re going to see Ed and Kelly find themselves impacted by a “time distortion.” Judging from the finale synopsis, it seems like whatever choice Grayson makes there is going to have far-reaching consequences for some of the crew:

The crew must contend with the disastrous fallout from Kelly’s decision in the all-new “The Road Not Taken” season finale episode of THE ORVILLE airing Thursday, April 25 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. (ORV-213) (TV-14 D, L, S, V)

Whoever knew that an episode named after Robert Frost could have so much shocking content within it? This episode will probably give you a great Adrianne Palicki performance, but also find a way to end this season with really high stakes as Kelly works to make this situation right … if she can.

This is where we would’ve loved to be a fly on the wall when Seth MacFarlane was thinking about how to properly end this season. At the time the finale was being put together, obviously there was no confirmation one way or another as to whether or not The Orville would be coming back for another season. That is actually still the case now, which means that we’re mostly left with a lingering possibility that something won’t be entirely resolved.

Obviously, the traditional network TV thing to do here is to end with some sort of cliffhanger, but we won’t actually be shocked if The Orville charts its own course towards the future. There’s long been a recognition that this show is more old-school in its approach, and rather than just jerk its viewers around for the sake of doing so, there is a recognition here that it’s more important to just tell important stories that are deeply satisfying and feel complete. It’s why The Orville has such a following in the first place.

Based on the quality of this season to date, we certainly do feel confident that no matter what happens, we’ll see this story conclude in a satisfying manner.
