Shadowhunters season 3 episode 13 ratings bounce back; full breakdown

We’re back another edition of Shadowhunters season 3 ratings, and this time around, we come bearing a little bit better news. Isn’t nice to actually have some of that to share again? This is a show that’s already been through so much; the last thing that we want to do is write about more sadness or declining ratings.

Today, we’re talking about a ratings turnaround! Last night’s episode 13 (read a full review on the subject here) brought in a 0.1 rating (slightly up versus week, though that exactly percentage may not make that clear when rounding off to a tenth) and also 346,000 viewers. That’s a nice increase from episode 12, and that brings the show a little bit closer to the 373,000 who caught the premiere in real-time.

How are these ratings calculated? If you’re a newbie to ratings, these are what we in the TV biz like to call live+same-day numbers. They are a combination of viewers who check out a show live alongside viewers who catch it that same day via DVR. It’s a sampling calculating by families with a special programming box by Nielsen — hence the nickname “Nielsen family” that’s thrown around out there. We recognize that there are viewers who are watching in other parts of the world or on TV after the fact, but there’s only so much intel that we get within the industry. Think of TV ratings as an iceberg — you see a tip of it, but the majority are still underwater. It’s a solid representative sample, if nothing else.

So why still calculate them for a canceled show? Another great question! First of all, we just love ratings and monitor them obsessively. We do this even for shows we don’t watch or cover anywhere near as much as Shadowhunters. Beyond that, we do this to gauge live popularity, consistency, and possible interest in more down the line. It’s an incredible thing to think about — this is a show that Freeform axed way back in the summer of 2018 and since that time, it hasn’t had a bevy of promotion aside from what the fans have done themselves. (Think in terms of awesome key art plus billboard, campaigns, and all of the wins at the Teen Choice and People’s Choice Awards.) They’ve kept the ship afloat and continue to steer it in the right direction.

All obstacles considered, the fact that Shadowhunters is marginally close to the numbers from the first half of season 3 is impressive. We haven’t heard anything about other interested parties for the franchise, but it’s still something that remains on our radar. Expect nothing, but never give up hope. It’s always nice to leave a small corner of your heart open for a surprise.
